Congress is just too good at this. Can't solve the solution of providing quality education to everyone? Because that requires allowing private investment in education; that requires more institutes; more courses; more teachers; more infrastructure. So what is the solution? Let's just scrap the damn exam! That ought to reduce the stress!!
What his foolish supporters do not understand is that it's not the exam that's causing the stress. It's the lack of opportunities available after the exam that's causing it. Seats in good colleges are only sufficient for the students with 95%+. It's a do or die situation. Anything less than 95% and u can say good bye to your dream colleges which in most likelihood would be handful of colleges across the country.
I am not really opposing the grading system. But I just think there are bigger issues at hand that need immediate attention rather than this populist measure.
Agree with you...but to only an extent...on another level i do think the exams should be done away with...youngsters are way too immature then for that kind of pressure...

I dont think exams need to be done away with, instead I think there should be a continuous evaluation of the student and his grades should depend on a whole lot of assessments than just one exam. But then does that increase the pressure on students?? Thats for the parents to see. And I do second yr view on having more 'good' colleges that offer vocational courses that makes you job ready and not a mere bookworm.

ReplyDeleteI am happy that My grandchild will turn out to be able to read only thereby contributing to the larger cause of the country by scoring on the Literacy Rate. And later he will join call center or open a BPO shop in the road afterall the core competency will be to read and speak may be english sometimes. SO he will propel the export oriented economy ( after all aloo le lo /kanda le lo will be unaffordable business).

ReplyDeleteLack of infrastructure and opportunities is definitely a cause for stress.
But I also feel that choosing subjects in class 11 is perhaps not the best way forward. It restricts the choices a student has after school. A 15 year old is perhaps a little too young to *really* know what his/her interests/strengths lie in. And to force someone to make this decision based on a board exam result is just too much pressure.
So I am confused as to what would be a practically feasible solution for this..
I think you are right, its actually lack of opportunity after exam that causes stress.
ReplyDeleteAnother nice post Anju. You've hit the nail on the head. The problem is lack of infrastructure, teachers and colleges, not the exams.But you can't expect Congress to understand that...their solutions seem to cause more problems than they solve.

Indians, taking into account the genetic predisposition to be resourceful and innovative, do not really need a change in a system.
For the sheer size of India, its educational system will always remain mediocre. It is how much students are able to extract out of it.
About, a 15 year old not be "old enough", what I wonder is an age when any human is old enough? Are politicians old enough?!
